The McGuire Programme (Aust)

Meet the real people that will help you throughout your journey:

Meet the Regional Director

Scott Monson, Canberra, Australia

I was 35 years old when I joined the programme and had stuttered all of my life. Despite 30 years of intensive programmes and treatments, I achieved little long term success with speaking fluently. I would avoid making phone calls and delegated all my work presentations to staff as 'professional development'. Now, my voice is my tool of trade as a professional trainer and executive coach (visit www.scottmonson.com.au), in addition to my role as Regional Director of the Australian programme. I truly have gone from a life filled with anxiety and avoidance to one of opportunity and new horizons....and you can too!

Geoff Johnston - Regional Director (2001-2014), SA, Australia

"Since joining the programme in 1999, I’ve progressed from being a chronic out of control stutterer to becoming a certified primary coach, course instructor, staff trainer and led the programme in Australia for 13 years before retiring in 2014. I’m a father of two and "Pop" to three grand-daughters. I live in Strathalbyn, South Australia. In my spare time (if any), I’m involved in Toastmasters and community service organisations. I also play tennis for the Hahndorf Tennis Club and support the Adelaide Crows in the AFL. I’m passionate about helping people who stutter gain control over their speech and achieve their life’s ambitions".

Cindy Melksham – Course Instructor, Victoria, Australia

I’d spent a lifetime of trying to hide my stutter by mainly avoiding every speaking situation. I was exhausted by the constant anxiety associated with this. Although I have a psychology degree, I was still working in a retail position because I allowed my stutter to hold me back. But my life changing moment happened in October 2009, when I joined the Programme. Not only did my speech improve but by learning to communicate more effectively, the real “me” revealed itself. I’m now a programme coach, course instructor and a licensed trainer of the self-development book Feel the Fear…And Do It Anyway ®. I run motivational workshops for the general public and I’m driven by my passion of helping others transform their lives the way I’ve transformed mine.

Geoff Martin

I joined the Mcguire Programme in 2001 at the age of 56. At that time my speech (heavily covert) was running and ruining my life. All decisions were stuttering situation based and I found lack of fluency influenced my lack of confidence. From 2001 onwards my life changed as I found my lack of fluency was confidence driven so as my speech improved so did my self esteem.

I joined Toastmasters in 2002 taking on various rolls before becoming President of my club in 2008. During that period I progressed as a certified coach in the McGuire Programme and took the role as State Coordinator. I have personally coached approx 40 students during that time and have had the satisfying experience overseeing other students being successfully coached by other coaches in my home state.

From my own experience and subsequent involvement I would thoroughly recommend the McGuire Programme for people whose life is controlled by the frustration of stuttering.

Robert Lucas

My name is Robert Lucas, from Adelaide in South Australia. I am a Staff Trainer, Course Instructor, and Coach on the Programme and have carried out success evaluations for David McGuire.

I did my first course on the McGuire Programme in January 1999. I was a very bad stutterer, who would shy away from every speaking situation, using every trick I could. My whole life was one of manipulation, avoidances and only making friends through my wife and other friends. My wife Kaye and I live in the Adelaide Hills. I have two children and four grandchildren. I am now retired

My success on the programme is due to expanding my comfort zone and challenging myself in every speaking situation. I joined Toastmasters and have had success in competitions represented South Australia in the 2004 humorous speech contest. I spoke to an audience of about 150 people. In the same year I was South Australian Toastmaster of the Year and gave an acceptance speech to about 200 Toastmasters.

I was instrumental in starting up the support group for the McGuire Programme in SA. I formed a Toastmasters club for the McGuire Graduates which now boasts 20 members, half of whom are non-stutterers. We are a successful club as we have had many participants in various speaking competitions.

I have appeared on numerous TV programmes, have made radio interviews and talk back shows and given talks to numerous service clubs, etc. I have also completed an acting course which I found helped me immensely with being open with myself. This has opened up a stage performance and joining a theatre group Top Of The Torrens Theatre Group.

Phil Jeffrey

I have been with the McGuire Programme since 1999, and became a course instructor in 2008 and Staff Trainer in 2010. Being on the Programme has given me the tools to tackle challenging speaking situations and achieve what I want in my career. I enjoy giving back to the Programme and helping new students overcome their fears and start their journey to freedom. I have met some wonderful people from all over Australia (and the world) who share similar issues to me, but we also share the will and motivation to overcome them - and that is what makes the McGuire Programme so successful.

Jade Vincent Hall

Hi, My names Jade Vincent Hall, I joined the McGuire programme in September 2007.

I was a late onset stutterer starting to have problems in my mid-teens. It was put down to stress after migrating from England to Australia .

Daily I found myself down and depressed. I avoided everyday situations and eventually hit rock bottom before I found the McGuire Programme which has proven to be pivotal in changing my outlook on life, not just speech wise but psychologically as well.

I am now a coach on the Programme and regularly "practise what I preach" in my everyday life by pushing out my comfort zones and constantly challenging myself.

I enjoy coming back to courses to help others do the same :)
